In my last post I wrote about the fashion advice I would give my younger self and the post was so well received because I think all of us are guilty of over buying into the Fashion hype. The Fashion industry thrives on us forever shifting our preferences so the commercials just keep flowing. While I don’t quite agree with it, because I am an old lady at heart who loves her classics and forever kind of pieces- that she can get a lot of wear out of, I still think that there are some trends that leave a mark and come to stay for a few seasons before fading into the Fashion abyss, only to re-emerge a decade or so later. So I wanted to write about the Autumn Winter’18 Fashion Trends in Womenswear just before the holiday season because I know we all indulge in retail therapy around this time as we try and make the most of the discounts and seasonal sales.
This post is in association with the Swindon Designer Outlet.
The new era of female empowerment sees the masculine suit reinterpreted with emphasis on broad shoulders and slim waists. Sartorial cloths such as tweed, wool gabardine and soft twill accentuate sharp cuts. Simple cuts are key to integral pieces such as the pencil skirt. A tweed pant suit will see you through many seasons, look at the classic Chanel suit iconised by Jackie Kennedy that has stayed for decades and is not going anywhere anytime soon.
Versatile across all classifications, saturated brights work well on dresses, sportswear and cosy knit sweaters. Contrasting bold jewel tones are used on textural materials such as leather, velvet and satin. Pair neons with dark winter hues such as black and grey to create a classy and stylish look. I don’t think you’ll ever spot me in too much neon, but a pair of bright neon shoes will do the job of lifting a dark outfit.
The Graphic Knit
A big cosy sweater or cardigan is a must have for AW18, driven by cosiness and enveloping texture. Retro prints in oversized and elongated silhouettes with cut out, patchwork and spliced detailing. This winter, style up or down those cosy knits that sit in your wardrobe or treat yourself to cashmere that you will wear season after season. Pick colours that suit your skin tone and that you see yourself wearing for years.
The Great Coat
AW18 is the season of the faux fur shaggy statement coats. More designers than ever are changing to faux fur for overcoats in oversized proportions, in colourways that vary from bright to more neutral tones. I always think a good coat is an investment, a fashion investment I hasten to add because it saves you a great deal of money on other things. Throw a beautiful coat on a simple pair of jeans and shirt to transform the look. I am personally a structured coat kind of girl, over a shaggy fur one but this season I may just experiment a bit for the love of fashion.
Utilitarian womenswear looks set to continue with momentum into AW18 with designers looking to workwear for inspiration. Multiple patch pockets, zips and drawstrings were key details, tailored with sump suits, trouser, jackets and technical coats. Workwear has forever been my source of inspiration for dressing up, whether it is blazers or well- made pencil skirts with zip details, I’ve always tried to extend these pieces to more than just work and what better than seeing your style mantra get a nod of approval from the fashion houses this season.
